SOUTH EAST EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY Faculty of Languages, Cultures and Communications Department of English Language and Literature and the Language Centre We are pleased to announce that an international conference: FROM TEACHING TO LEARNING: CURRENT TRENDS IN ELT will be held in Tetovo, Macedonia, 9-11 April, 2010. CALL FOR PAPERSEnglish language teachers in Macedonia and in the Balkans generally face many challenges in teaching English as a Foreign Language. Traditional teaching methodologies have, over the past few years, come increasingly under scrutiny and teachers have had to adapt to new teaching models which emphasize active, task-based learning and which integrate modern technologies into the classroom. New trends in teaching constantly challenge educators and it is only through dialogue with fellow practitioners that educators can themselves learn and develop their professional skills. Conferences are obviously a good opportunity to foster a continuing professional dialogue amongst English language teachers.
This is why, in the eighth year of its operation, South East European University now invites proposals for an international conference to be held in Tetovo, on the theme: “FROM TEACHING TO LEARNING: CURRENT TRENDS IN ELT”. The aim of this conference is to bring together English language teachers from South East Europe and elsewhere to exchange views and present research on the many issues and challenges ELT professionals face in the context of modern trends in education. This conference will be an excellent opportunity for classroom practitioners to learn and share ideas, research findings and teaching philosophies.
The conference objectives are: - To exchange ideas about current teaching methods
- To explore issues related to learner autonomy
- To narrow the gap between teaching and research
- To review the role of English Language in a changing world
- To examine new trends in ELT
The conference organisers welcome proposals which fall within the broad areas of: 1. Applied Linguistics 2. Second Language Acquisition 3. ELT Methodology
Potential delegates may wish to consider sending proposals in the following areas (but please note that this is not an exhaustive list): English for Specific Purposes, Assessment and Testing, Course Design and Needs Analysis, Classroom Management, Relationship between L1 and L2, Literature and ELT, The role of culture in ELT, Technology in the EFL Classroom. We invite the following types of proposals:
A) Paper: (30 minutes) which includes 20 minute presentation and 10 minutes question/answer time. It should discuss what the presenter is doing or has done in relation to theory and practice. B) Workshop: (40 minutes) The workshop leader should aim to involve the participants in activities which help the participants solve problems or develop specific teaching techniques. A step by step procedure of the workshop along with a short description of activities should be outlined.
While writing the paper/workshop outline please keep the following points in mind:
1. In general, presentations should draw on practical classroom experiences. 2. Preference will be given to papers which aim to explore new trends in ELT from a theoretical and practical standpoint. 3. Don’t forget to include your contact details and affiliation with your proposal.
