The Criminal Law study program aims to provide a range of modules that will form the basis of information and advanced knowledge on criminal law matters for the purpose of training students to basic legal professions related to this field by providing solid knowledge, the specific and systematic institutes and concepts of criminal law in R. Macedonia and comparative knowledge to the region and the EU.

The Diploma of the study program will enable PhD students to be able to conduct scientific research work in the field of Criminal law sciences, as well as teaching at universities in the country and abroad, and also will be actively involved in the process of strengthening the resources of government activities in terms of the country's Euro-Atlantic integration process.

Knowledge and understanding

- Has advanced theoretical, empiric and comparative knowledge on criminal law sciences as well as advanced knowledge on the legislation and jurisdiction in the area of the prevention of crime.
- Has in-depth understanding of problems related to crime and penal sanctions especially in the fields of comparative criminal law and procedure, theoretical and applicable criminology and penology, organized crime and forensic sciences (medicine, psychiatry, psychology).
- Has specific knowledge of advanced research techniques and methods in the area of criminal law and procedure.

Applying knowledge and understanding

- Identifies and analyzes more complex problems in the area of criminal law and procedure, thus can take active part in all the stages of a criminal procedure as well as can interpret advanced issues of the criminal legislation (including working as a judge, prosecutor or attorney, once they have the needed qualifications according to the legislation of RNM).
- Utilizes the knowledge gained through research in the problem solving process through comparing practices and solutions in the area of prevention of crime.

Making judgement

- Performs more critical thinking through methods of analyzing and comparing.
- Develops skills of solving problems through case-law practices of more complex national and international cases.

Communication skills

- Utilizes proper terminology for complex and specific issues in the area of criminal law sciences.
- Is able to reach decisions and work more directly and effectively in all the police and court stages of a criminal procedure.
- Is involved in research based legal argumentation and debate.
- Utilizes the official languages of the University as well as more advanced computer skills in the research work.

Learning skills

- Develops a regulation of research to be used in their profession.
- Creates a practice of lifelong learning and service through being involved in training persons that work in the state institutions of crime prevention.

Semester 1

  • [DLAW0101] [10 ECTS] Research Methodology
    This course is designed for students who are preparing to carry out a doctoral thesis project. The main objective of the course is to offer students tools conceptualizing their thesis regarding research issue and the creation of data collection methods and qualitative analysis. The course is focused on problems of the quantitative methods and techniques, such as statistical analysis, texts related to theory and testing hypotheses. Then, the meaning and topics of descriptive and causal inferenceare of a great importance, longitudinal comparative research and case study. Advanced information data collection will be offered for working with text. The goal is to analyze the quality of data and incorporate all theoretical and practical performances in the function of designing and writing of the thesis.
  • [DCR0102] [10 ECTS] Criminal Law - depth program
    Basis for teaching in this course is the General and Special aspects of Criminal Law. In this course, instead of the traditional method ex cathedra, the case study method and clinical methods will be actively implemented.
  • [EDCR0101] [10 ECTS] Criminology and Penology
    The acquisition of advanced knowledge on the object of study of Criminology and its main institutions, issues and contemporary trends and studying the influence of various factors in the commission of offenses, criminological examinations on the perpetrator and victim of crime and identification and criminological analysis of contemporary issues. The acquisition of advanced knowledge on the subject of study of Penology and its main institutions, issues and contemporary trends and studying the influence of various factors in the execution of criminal sanctions, penological examination regarding the punishment imposed as well as identifying and analyzing penological contemporary issues.

Semester 2

  • [DCR0104] [10 ECTS] Review and Approval of the Doctoral Dissertation Plan
    After the first semester, the student begins his activities for the development of the plan on his doctoral dissertation. Activities include the definition of literature, defining hypothetical framework, the definition of the work methodology and determination of the individual plan as well as the first public presentation. If necessary, can be held elective courses for this purpose.

Semester 3/4

  • [PHD-S3-S4-01] [40 ECTS] Scientific Research Work
    In the second year (semester 3 and 4) the candidate continues with research activity by approved individual plan. Mentor provides assessment on these activities in the form of a report to the Scientific-Teaching Council of the Faculty.
  • [PHD-S3-S4-02] [15 ECTS] Publications I
    Publication of research activities under the table relevant to the media for publication. Publication activities and successes of the candidate checked before scientific audience by area and the relevance of the research.
  • [C2020] [5 ECTS] Student Mobility
    During the fourth semester the student is obliged to visit and contribute to a relevant institution abroad for a period of at least one week. The aim of PhD students’ mobility is to request candidates to present, exchange and discuss their research work with their colleagues from other countries for improving the quality of their dissertation. For the realization of mobility, the student brings evidence to the mentor.

Semester 5

  • [DCR0106] [20 ECTS] Presentation of Research Results
    At the end of the 5th semester, after the research activities under the individual plan, overall results of this phase of the paper and the research will be presented publicly by the candidate.

    Publication of research activities under the table relevant to the media for publication. Publication activities and successes of the candidate checked before scientific audience by area and the relevance of the research.

Semester 6

  • [CR-PhD-THESIS] [30 ECTS] Doctoral Dissertation
    Continuing the work of doctoral dissertation. Submitted thesis (dissertation), accepted by the Scientific-Teaching Council of the Faculty and submitted to committee members and begin the procedure of public defense.
