Semester 1

• [6 ECTS] Basics of English grammar
  During the studies, different methods will be used. The main method will be analysis and comparison of the linguistic theories and schools. The demonstrative method will be used in publishing results of the material covered, through the comparative method, the language characteristics will be compared with other cultures and traditions.
• [6 ECTS] Phonetics and Phonology
  The phonology course focuses on the basic phonological concepts, like the inventory and the distribution of the English phonemes, allophones, their characteristics, the morph-phonology, the syllable structure and the syllable characteristics. It also focuses on the acoustic, articulatory, and auditive phonetics, including the description and the classification of the English consonants, and the simple and complex vowels.
• [3 ECTS] English Literature - Prose
  English Literature: Prose is a course which leads the students to a whole spectrum of English prose texts. Starting with the language of the English Bible, the course investigates some topics of the Elizabethan and Jacobean prose, including writers like John Donne, Francis Bacon, and Isaac Walton. Then it goes to the 18th century to investigate about the beginnings of the English novel with Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Aphra Behn, Laurence Sterne. It continues with the introduction of the Victorian novel including Dickens, Eliot, Bronte Sisters, as well as the later Victorians like Thomas Hardy and Oscar Wilde. This historical approach is fulfilled at the second part of the course focusing on genre, including very important prose genres like Gothic fiction, detective/crime fiction, the thriller, science fiction, and professional literary genre like biography, travel writing, journalism, and political writing. The course finishes with the investigation of the modern novel and the modern short story together with some examples of post-modern fiction.

  English Language Skills 1 is an integrated skills course designed to develop students’ competencies in the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). The focus of the course will be on combining (integrating) the skills in a flexible, creative manner so that students with varying needs can still meet their own academic, personal and professional objectives. To this end, the methodological approach that will predominate is the communicative one with a strong pedagogical emphasis on grammatical accuracy, lexical depth, syntactical fluency and socio-linguistic sensitivity.

  Language Courses

  • Albanian Language for Professional Purposes
    After finishing the course Albanian Language for Professional Purposes the students will be able practically use the knowledge which will serve them throughout their employment as well as in their future carrier. Students will be expected to know the differences in spoken and written language, the characteristics of professional communication (report, CV, email), the specifics of professional writing, the most common grammatical forms, to recognize the differences amongst the scientific, administrative and the socio political styles of writing. The students should be able to know the rules of how to organize interviews and debates, to know how to properly write cover letters and to interpret particular texts in a written and spoken form.
  • Academic Writing in English
    In this course students’ academic writing skills will be enhanced in a variety of ways. Students will be enabled to communicate their ideas in a clear, fluent and effective way in order to produce a piece of writing. Students’ academic writing skills will be developed through activities that promote writing like: writing different types of paragraphs and essays. Also, students will be introduced to paraphrasing and citing rules as well as will be made aware of what plagiarism is. Giving feedback on students’ pieces of writing will involve self-correction, peer-correction and teacher-correction of content, organization and language errors.
  • Academic Writing in Macedonian
    After finishing the Academic Writing in the Macedonian course the students are expected to gain appropriate knowledge and advanced communication in Macedonian language with particular emphasis on writing skills. In addition, it is expected that students will become more autonomous and responsible learners. Moreover, students will be able to improve their writing skills in more levels and thereby they will become more confident and more competent when writing in Macedonian. They will be able to reflect critically on different topics, to make conclusions and they will develop skills for excellent written and oral communication in Macedonian.
  • Academic Writing in Albanian
    By the end of each level the students are expected to write an essay and a research paper based on the rules learned during the semester. Specifically, from them it is expected to know the function, the structure and the different types of paragraphs, ways of choosing research topics, collecting the material, the rules for source documentation and the final model.
  • German Language (level 1 to 4)
    After completing each level students will be able to gain appropriate knowledge according to the European Language Framework (specifically and concretely determined by level). In addition, students are expected to become more autonomous and more responsible language learners. By the end of the course, students will be able to think critically and make conclusions about different topics based on the texts that they have read, as well as to express their thoughts and opinions in written and spoken German.
  • French Language
    The French language is now spoken by 200 million people worldwide: 115 million native French speakers and 85 million learners of French, making it the most widely learned second language after English. French is the native language on 5 continents. In addition French is the most used language after English, in international organizations. French is, alongside English, language of work of the secretariat of the United Nations, and official language along with five other languages (English, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Chinese). French is the official language of the Universal Postal Union. French is one of the three working languages of the European Union, the other two being English and German. French is the only language used in the deliberations of the European Court of Justice. French is, alongside English, the official language of the International Olympic Committee. In international institutions such as UNESCO, NATO, the Council of Europe and the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), the World Anti-Doping, FIFA (International Federation of Football Associations), French is the official language, and in others, like the World Bank, the World Health Organization, the African Union and Interpol, French is preferred language of work.   • Public Speaking
    Upon completion of this course the students will gain knowledge about the communication process, the ethical responsibilities of public speaking and the different types of informative and persuasive speeches. In addition, the students will acquire skills necessary for preparing and delivering different types of speeches, audience analysis, researching speech topics, preparing speeches etc. After completing the Public Speaking course, the students will be able to think critically through constructive self-criticism and criticism towards the speeches of the others.
  • Intercultural Studies
    Having completed this course the students will able to identify global questions and problems from the perspectives of different cultures, the communication dynamics in the other cultures, the similarities and the differences between their values and those of other cultures, as well as the similarities and differences between their communication practices and those from other cultures. In addition, students are expected to become more aware of the stereotypes that society has for different cultures and as a result will better understand their place in the global community. The students will start thinking critically about topics related to their ethnicity, gender identity, class, religion, national origin, age and other demographic characteristics and their impact on the communication process. After finishing Intercultural Studies, the students will also gain communication skills for working in groups through participation in research projects and will acquire the necessary skills to present their research projects.

    The course Communication Skills is designed to enable students to practically apply interpersonal communication. Students will have the opportunity to learn interpersonal skills (such as perception, listening, verbal and non verbal communication); public speaking (such as: organization, delivery and the basics of writing public speeches) and small group communication (such as: leadership, self confidence and listening). The course will also focus on providing basic knowledge and understanding of the job hunting process through written and oral communication by doing tasks such as writing a resume and a cover letter, conducting interview simulations etc.

  • Advanced Excel
    The purpose of this course is to provide the students with advanced knowledge of this application and of the opportunities offered by the Microsoft Excel application. As well as to enable them to carry out advanced tasks which are associated with their faculty’s programe.
  • Advanced IT skills
    The aims of this course are: * To enable students to acquire basic knowledge and skills in the field of information sciences * To enable the students to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge in Microsoft Office applications (Windows, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access) and to apply them in real life situations. * To enable the students to work individually or in groups on practical projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of Word and PowerPoint
    The aim of this course is to enable the students to acquire advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and to familiarize them with the opportunities which are offered by them. Moreover, it will enable the students to independently implement various projects and specific complex tasks which are associated with the program in which they study.

    The aims of this course are: * To enable the students to acquire advanced knowledge and skills in the field of electronic services (cloud applications). * To enable the students to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge in Google Docs (G-mail, Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Drawings and Forms) and to apply them in real life. * To enable the students to work individually or in groups on various online projects, directly through the web browser.
  • Advanced Access
    Databases are ideal tools for tracking large volumes of Data and Microsoft Access is a quite popular and powerful tool which is used for designing and developing Windows-based databases. This course is intended for new users of Access where the most important functions needed for working with databases are processed.
  • Desktop Publications
    The aim of this course is designing and processing raster and vector graphics through the leading programs Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as designing and publishing commercial materials for print using Adobe InDesign.
  • Web Publications
    Developing even a simple web page according to current standards requires knowledge of Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Most of the websites also use images, whether in the form of banners, buttons, logos, photos or scans. Adobe Fireworks is built as a tool to create and manipulate images from the web and to allow the makers to optimize these images in order to reduce the file size. Firework also provides an excellent integration with Dreamweaver. This series provides a comprehensive introduction to XHTML, CSS and creating web graphics.

  • Environmental Protection
    The aims of this course are: * To familiarize the students with the basic environmental problems. * To familiarize the students with the role of humans as the key factor in the process of pollution and environmental protection. * To familiarize the students with the influence of various environmental pollutants on health, the professional activity and the organizational ability of the human factor. * Creating positive habits for the environment and raising the awareness for a healthier and cleaner environment. * International and national legislation and international conventions on the environment. * Introduction to international and national global policies in the field of environment. * The environment as a condition for sustainable economic development. * The role of the society in the protection of the environment. * Introducing the major risks to a healthy environment. * Introducing the National Environmental Strategy of the Republic of Macedonia.
  • Sports, Recreation and Culture
    Theory: (in general about sports, disciplines, hygiene, sports medicine, nutrition and general culture). Practical teaching: organizing collective and individual sports games and other activities in the hall and the sports facilities in the campus.
  • Professional Career Development
    This course offers practical, results-oriented instruction for seeking, obtaining and keeping employment. It is intended to provide students with the appropriate job skills needed in the modern workplace. Specific tasks that will be covered will be composing an effective c.v., writing a letter of inquiry/interest, interviewing skills, and formal communication within the office (memos, formal emails to superiors or customers, reports, etc.). Additional elements that will be covered will be how to conduct a self-evaluation, how to manage inter-office conflict, and how to seek promotions actively. Although the primary focus of this course will be on white collar employment, the skills obtained through the instruction are applicable to the job search process generally.

  • Albanian language for beginners 1
    Albanian language for beginners 1 is an obligatory three- credit course. It is designed for students who do not possess basic knowledge of the Albanian language in order to familiarize them with the features of this language, to acquire knowledge about the linguistic structure of the Albanian language, to acquire a moderate number of lexical sets which will aid them in basic communication. Taking into consideration that it is a beginners’ course, it is aimed to be flexible and adaptable to the students’ opportunities and interests. Through this course, students will acquire the necessary knowledge about the grammar of the Albanian language, students’ vocabulary will be systematically expanded, starting from concepts related with objects, colors, numbers, etc. through activities that will aid the development of students’ linguistic competences.
  • Albanian language for beginners 2
    Albanian language for beginners 2 is an obligatory three- credit course. It is designed for students who possess basic knowledge of the Albanian language in order to expand and apply the knowledge acquired in the previous semester in everyday situations, which will also help them acquire knowledge about the linguistic structure of the Albanian language, to acquire a moderate number of lexical and grammatical categories which will aid them in simple conversation. Even though it is a second- level beginners’ course, it is designed to be flexible and adaptable to students’ opportunities and interests.
  • Albanian language for beginners 3
    After completing level 3, students are expected to be able to communicate well in Albanian, to apply their knowledge about word order and grammar rules needed for conversation, as well as to write simple paragraphs when describing places they have visited, films they have seen, novels they have read, etc. They should also be able to write short biographies, differentiate between formal an informal email messages and to express themselves in an oral or written form when discussing different topics. These courses can serve as bases for further improvement of the language through self study.
  • Macedonian Language 1
    Macedonian Language 1 is designed to meet the needs of the students with Albanian as a language of instruction, and is primarily geared towards practical studying of the Macedonian language. The classes are held twice a week and the course itself has 3 (three) credits. The syllabus consists of the basics of Macedonian orthography. At the beginning, the classification of languages and the place of the Macedonian language and the other Balkan languages within the frames of the Indo-European family of languages are reviewed. A special attention is given to the Balkan linguistic community and the structural similarities among the Balkan languages, and above all, between Macedonian and Albanian. Then, students study the orthography of the Macedonian language through which students largely increase their ability to use written and spoken Macedonian correctly. Macedonian language I classes are interactive by engaging the students to participate in lessons. This is, above all, due to the fact that more attention is paid to the practical use of Macedonian orthography, which motivates the students to revise and demonstrate their knowledge in class.
  • Macedonian Language 2
    Macedonian Language 2 curriculum is designed to meet the needs of the students with Albanian as a language of instruction, and is primarily geared towards practical studying of the Macedonian language. The classes are held twice a week and the course itself has 3 (three) credits. The syllabus consists of the basics of Macedonian grammar. At the beginning of the semester, it deals with the morphology of the Macedonian language with a special emphasis on the categories of nouns, adjectives and verbs. A special attention is given to the complex verb forms that correspond to their forms in Albanian through which students largely increase their ability to use written and spoken Macedonian correctly. Macedonian language 2 classes are interactive by engaging the students to participate in the lessons. This is, above all, due to the fact that more attention is paid to the practical use of Macedonian grammar, which motivates the students to revise and demonstrate their knowledge in class.
  • Macedonian Language 3
    The course Macedonian language 3 is aimed to expand students’ knowledge in Macedonian so that they can express themselves in writing and orally at a more advanced level. At the same time students are expected to become more autonomous in their learning and to take responsibility for it. After completion of this course, students will be able to read, write and comprehend different types of texts in Macedonian. They will also acquire skills for successful written and oral translation from Macedonian into Albanian. Upon completion of this course, students will be enabled to think critically and express their opinion in Macedonian as well as to communicate successfully in a multilingual and multicultural setting. Macedonian language 3 deals with all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) with a special focus on written and oral translations of different types of texts from the field of language, culture, tradition and multicultural values, necessary for everyday life, academic and professional settings.
  • Macedonian Language 4
    The course Macedonian language 4 is a continuation of the previous course – Macedonian language 3. It is focused on further development of students’ knowledge and skills for an advanced written and oral expression in Macedonian in a multicultural and multilingual setting. After completion of this course, students will be able to read, write and comprehend different types of texts in Macedonian, as well as to perform written and oral translation from Macedonian into Albanian. They will also be able to think critically, debate and discuss on different topics from every day and professional life.
  • Macedonian Language for beginners 1
    The curriculum for Macedonian Language for beginners 1 is designed to meet the needs of the students with Albanian as a language of instruction who do not know Macedonian and is primarily geared towards practical studying of the Macedonian language. The classes are held twice a week and the course itself has 3 (three) credits. The syllabus deals with the initial studying of the Macedonian language. At the beginning of the semester, attention is given to mastering the alphabet, correct reading, pronunciation and writing in Macedonian. A special attention is given to the basic communication in Macedonian, i.e. introducing, greeting, and, finally, concepts related to time and space. The classes for Macedonian language for beginners 1 are interactive by engaging the students to participate in lessons. This is, above all, due to the fact that more attention is paid to the practical use of Macedonian orthography, which motivates the students to revise and demonstrate their knowledge in class.
  • Macedonian Language for beginners 2
    The curriculum for Macedonian Language for beginners 2 is designed to meet the needs of the students with Albanian as a language of instruction who do not know Macedonian and is primarily geared towards practical studying of the Macedonian language. The classes are held twice a week and the course itself has 3 (three) credits. The content of the syllabus builds up on the knowledge previously gained in the first semester. At the beginning of the semester, attention is given to the use of the adjectives in everyday life, and through it, the use of the more complex sentences in Macedonian is studied. Throughout the semester, students expand the acquired knowledge through dialogues, which helps students to largely increase their ability to use written and spoken Macedonian correctly. Classes in Macedonian language for beginners 2 are interactive and with continuous build- up of the acquired skills.
  • Macedonian Language for beginners 3
    After completion of the course Macedonian Language for beginners 3, students are expected to acquire knowledge and skills that will enable them to communicate in Macedonian. Besides that, students are expected to become more autonomous in learning the language. They will be able to read simple texts in Macedonian and write paragraphs. At the same time, they will be enabled to communicate in Macedonian both in a written form and orally. The course is focused on all four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. However, more attention is paid to developing students’ communication skills necessary for everyday real life situations.
  • Macedonian Language for beginners 4
    Macedonian Language for beginners 4 is a continuation of the previous course, Macedonian Language for beginners 3, and is focused on further development of students’ language skills in Macedonian. After completion of this course, students will be able to read longer texts in Macedonian and to write texts on different topics. Their communication skills in Macedonian, both written and oral, are also expected to become more developed, especially those needed for communication in every day, real life situations.
  • Academic writing in Macedonian
    The curriculum of Academic writing in Macedonian is designed to meet the needs of the students with Macedonian as a language of instruction, and is primarily geared towards enhancing the writing skills in Macedonian. The classes are held twice a week and the course itself has 3 (three) credits. The syllabus focuses on the written expression processes through planning, preparing, writing, revising, reviewing, and the final product- paragraph writing. The first classes cover the academic writing terminology: paragraph, essay, portfolio, seminar paper as well as written and spoken interference which will help students become more efficient in terms of correct use of written Macedonian language. Then, students are trained to write paragraphs and paragraph structure in Macedonian. On the final classes, students are working on the process of paragraph writing on a given topic by applying the acquired knowledge of the orthographical rules.

Semester 2

• [3 ECTS] English Literature - Poetry
  This course presents some of the greatest poets of the English, Irish and American literary tradition. The focus of the course is double: it aims to analyze and evaluate important genres of English language poetry (the sonnet, lyrical verse, free verse), and to ensure a broad overview of the greatest poets of the English language. Special attention is paid to major poets, such as: Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, John Donne, William Blake, William Wordsworth, John Keats, Alfred Tennyson, W.B. Yeats, T.S. Eliot. Evaluation is through essay, in-class discussions, in-class presentations and final exam. By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of different types of poetic expression, and will understand the development of poetry in English speaking countries.
• [6 ECTS] American Culture
  The goal of the course is to make students understand the dynamics of culture, both inside and outside the classroom, they begin developing an awareness and appreciation of the research base that supports current practices in teaching culture, as well as studying U.S. society and culture. This course focuses on general models, strategies and skills that apply culture and cultural concepts. The course deals with the concept of culture, definitions and importance of culture in human relations as well as cultural sensitivity and experiences, attitudes, values in the various literature that they have been written. Since its very inception, the United States has been a society characterized by diversity—especially of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, region, and class. We will examine how broad social, demographic, and cultural changes in American life in the past century have affected the identities of the American people.

  The Morphology course is concentrated on the morphological characteristics of the English language. It also includes the grammatical categories and other word functions of the student’s mother tongue like: nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, the definite and indefinite articles, conjunction, numbers and exclamation. Special attention is paid to the form and function of the above mentioned parts of speech.

  English Language Skills 2 is a follow up of English Language Skills 1 and represents an integrated course which focuses on the combination of the four language skills in a way that fits students’ academic needs. The focus is on developing the four language skills through exposure to authentic materials and recourses. A strong emphasis is given to the grammar accuracy, pronunciation and fluency, which is evaluated through participation in various role plays, games and other interactive activities. The vocabulary expansion is an indispensable and core part of this course.

  • Albanian language for beginners 1
    Albanian language for beginners 1 is an obligatory three- credit course. It is designed for students who do not possess basic knowledge of the Albanian language in order to familiarize them with the features of this language, to acquire knowledge about the linguistic structure of the Albanian language, to acquire a moderate number of lexical sets which will aid them in basic communication. Taking into consideration that it is a beginners’ course, it is aimed to be flexible and adaptable to the students’ opportunities and interests. Through this course, students will acquire the necessary knowledge about the grammar of the Albanian language, students’ vocabulary will be systematically expanded, starting from concepts related with objects, colors, numbers, etc. through activities that will aid the development of students’ linguistic competences.
  • Albanian language for beginners 2
    Albanian language for beginners 2 is an obligatory three- credit course. It is designed for students who possess basic knowledge of the Albanian language in order to expand and apply the knowledge acquired in the previous semester in everyday situations, which will also help them acquire knowledge about the linguistic structure of the Albanian language, to acquire a moderate number of lexical and grammatical categories which will aid them in simple conversation. Even though it is a second- level beginners’ course, it is designed to be flexible and adaptable to students’ opportunities and interests.
  • Albanian language for beginners 3
    After completing level 3, students are expected to be able to communicate well in Albanian, to apply their knowledge about word order and grammar rules needed for conversation, as well as to write simple paragraphs when describing places they have visited, films they have seen, novels they have read, etc. They should also be able to write short biographies, differentiate between formal an informal email messages and to express themselves in an oral or written form when discussing different topics. These courses can serve as bases for further improvement of the language through self study.
  • Macedonian Language 1
    Macedonian Language 1 is designed to meet the needs of the students with Albanian as a language of instruction, and is primarily geared towards practical studying of the Macedonian language. The classes are held twice a week and the course itself has 3 (three) credits. The syllabus consists of the basics of Macedonian orthography. At the beginning, the classification of languages and the place of the Macedonian language and the other Balkan languages within the frames of the Indo-European family of languages are reviewed. A special attention is given to the Balkan linguistic community and the structural similarities among the Balkan languages, and above all, between Macedonian and Albanian. Then, students study the orthography of the Macedonian language through which students largely increase their ability to use written and spoken Macedonian correctly. Macedonian language I classes are interactive by engaging the students to participate in lessons. This is, above all, due to the fact that more attention is paid to the practical use of Macedonian orthography, which motivates the students to revise and demonstrate their knowledge in class.
  • Macedonian Language 2
    Macedonian Language 2 curriculum is designed to meet the needs of the students with Albanian as a language of instruction, and is primarily geared towards practical studying of the Macedonian language. The classes are held twice a week and the course itself has 3 (three) credits. The syllabus consists of the basics of Macedonian grammar. At the beginning of the semester, it deals with the morphology of the Macedonian language with a special emphasis on the categories of nouns, adjectives and verbs. A special attention is given to the complex verb forms that correspond to their forms in Albanian through which students largely increase their ability to use written and spoken Macedonian correctly. Macedonian language 2 classes are interactive by engaging the students to participate in the lessons. This is, above all, due to the fact that more attention is paid to the practical use of Macedonian grammar, which motivates the students to revise and demonstrate their knowledge in class.
  • Macedonian Language 3
    The course Macedonian language 3 is aimed to expand students’ knowledge in Macedonian so that they can express themselves in writing and orally at a more advanced level. At the same time students are expected to become more autonomous in their learning and to take responsibility for it. After completion of this course, students will be able to read, write and comprehend different types of texts in Macedonian. They will also acquire skills for successful written and oral translation from Macedonian into Albanian. Upon completion of this course, students will be enabled to think critically and express their opinion in Macedonian as well as to communicate successfully in a multilingual and multicultural setting. Macedonian language 3 deals with all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) with a special focus on written and oral translations of different types of texts from the field of language, culture, tradition and multicultural values, necessary for everyday life, academic and professional settings.

    The course Macedonian language 4 is a continuation of the previous course – Macedonian language 3. It is focused on further development of students’ knowledge and skills for an advanced written and oral expression in Macedonian in a multicultural and multilingual setting. After completion of this course, students will be able to read, write and comprehend different types of texts in Macedonian, as well as to perform written and oral translation from Macedonian into Albanian. They will also be able to think critically, debate and discuss on different topics from every day and professional life.

At the beginning of the semester, attention is given to mastering the alphabet, correct reading, pronunciation and writing in Macedonian. A special attention is given to the basic communication in Macedonian, i.e. introducing, greeting, and, finally, concepts related to time and space. The classes for Macedonian language for beginners 1 are interactive by engaging the students to participate in lessons. This is, above all, due to the fact that more attention is paid to the practical use of Macedonian orthography, which motivates the students to revise and demonstrate their knowledge in class.

    The curriculum for Macedonian Language for beginners 2 is designed to meet the needs of the students with Albanian as a language of instruction who do not know Macedonian and is primarily geared towards practical studying of the Macedonian language. The classes are held twice a week and the course itself has 3 (three) credits. The content of the syllabus builds up on the knowledge previously gained in the first semester. At the beginning of the semester, attention is given to the use of the adjectives in everyday life, and through it, the use of the more complex sentences in Macedonian is studied. Throughout the semester, students expand the acquired knowledge through dialogues, which helps students to largely increase their ability to use written and spoken Macedonian correctly. Classes in Macedonian language for beginners 2 are interactive and with continuous build- up of the acquired skills.
  • Macedonian Language for beginners 3
    After completion of the course Macedonian Language for beginners 3, students are expected to acquire knowledge and skills that will enable them to communicate in Macedonian. Besides that, students are expected to become more autonomous in learning the language. They will be able to read simple texts in Macedonian and write paragraphs. At the same time, they will be enabled to communicate in Macedonian both in a written form and orally. The course is focused on all four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. However, more attention is paid to developing students’ communication skills necessary for everyday real life situations.
  • Macedonian Language for beginners 4
    Macedonian Language for beginners 4 is a continuation of the previous course, Macedonian Language for beginners 3, and is focused on further development of students’ language skills in Macedonian. After completion of this course, students will be able to read longer texts in Macedonian and to write texts on different topics. Their communication skills in Macedonian, both written and oral, are also expected to become more developed, especially those needed for communication in every day, real life situations.
  • Academic writing in Macedonian
    The curriculum of Academic writing in Macedonian is designed to meet the needs of the students with Macedonian as a language of instruction, and is primarily geared towards enhancing the writing skills in Macedonian. The classes are held twice a week and the course itself has 3 (three) credits. The syllabus focuses on the written expression processes through planning, preparing, writing, revising, reviewing, and the final product- paragraph writing. The first classes cover the academic writing terminology: paragraph, essay, portfolio, seminar paper as well as written and spoken interference which will help students become more efficient in terms of correct use of written Macedonian language. Then, students are trained to write paragraphs and paragraph structure in Macedonian. On the final classes, students are working on the process of paragraph writing on a given topic by applying the acquired knowledge of the orthographical rules.

• [6 ECTS] English Language Skills 3
  English Language Skills 3 is an integrated course which aims to develop the four language skills (speaking, listening, writing and reading). For that reason, the communicative methodological approach will be used with a pedagogical focus on emphasising grammatical, lexical, syntactical correctness and socio-linguistic sensitivity.
• [6 ECTS] English Literature: Drama
  In this course some of the great dramas of the English language will be studied. The course will start with medieval religious drama and then it moves to Shakespeare and Elizabethan drama, followed by eighteenth century Restoration comedy, and it finishes with study of modern drama including Samuel Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot', and the work of Harold Pinter. It will also focus on the evolution of dramatic stagecraft, and it will explore the interaction of social, political and historical change with theatrical developments. Students’ work will be assessed by essays, by in-class presentations, by projects, by exam and by in-class discussion.
• [6 ECTS] Introduction to English Syntax
  ENGLISH SYNTAX is for the second year students of the English Language and Studies Division of the Teacher Training Faculty. This course includes 2 contact hours of lectures and one contact hour of practice per week. The length of the course is 14 weeks (a mid-term exam after week eight and a final exam at the end).

  • Albanian Language for Professional Purposes
    After finishing the course Albanian Language for Professional Purposes the students will be able practically use the knowledge which will serve them throughout their employment as well as in their future carrier. Students will be expected to know the differences in spoken and written language, the characteristics of professional communication (report, CV, email), the specifics of professional writing, the most common grammatical forms, to recognize the differences amongst the scientific, administrative and the socio political styles of writing. The students should be able to know the rules of how to organize interviews and debates, to know how to properly write cover letters and to interpret particular texts in a written and spoken form.
  • Academic Writing in English
    In this course students’ academic writing skills will be enhanced in a variety of ways. Students will be enabled to communicate their ideas in a clear, fluent and effective way in order to produce a piece of writing. Students’ academic writing skills will be developed through activities that promote writing like: writing different types of paragraphs and essays. Also, students will be introduced to paraphrasing and citing rules as well as will be made aware of what plagiarism is. Giving feedback on students’ pieces of writing will involve self-correction, peer-correction and teacher-correction of content, organization and language errors.
  • Academic Writing in Macedonian
    After finishing the Academic Writing in the Macedonian course the students are expected to gain appropriate knowledge and advanced communication in Macedonian language with particular emphasis on writing skills. In addition, it is expected that students will become more autonomous and responsible learners. Moreover, students will be able to improve their writing skills in more levels and thereby they will become more confident and more competent when writing in Macedonian. They will be able to reflect critically on different topics, to make conclusions and they will develop skills for excellent written and oral communication in Macedonian.
  • Academic Writing in Albanian
    By the end of each level the students are expected to write an essay and a research paper based on the rules learned during the semester. Specifically, from them it is expected to know the function, the structure and the different types of paragraphs, ways of choosing research topics, collecting the material, the rules for source documentation and the final model.
  • German Language (level 1 to 4)
    After completing each level students will be able to gain appropriate knowledge according to the European Language Framework (specifically and concretely determined by level). In addition, students are expected to become more autonomous and more responsible language learners. By the end of the course, students will be able to think critically and make conclusions about different topics based on the texts that they have read, as well as to express their thoughts and opinions in written and spoken German.

French is the native language on 5 continents. In addition French is the most used language after English, in international organizations. French is the official language of the Universal Postal Union. French is one of the three working languages of the European Union, the other two being English and German.     Upon completion of this course the students will gain knowledge about the communication process, the ethical responsibilities of public speaking and the different types of informative and persuasive speeches. In addition, the students will acquire skills necessary for preparing and delivering different types of speeches, audience analysis, researching speech topics, preparing speeches etc. After completing the Public Speaking course, the students will be able to think critically through constructive self-criticism and criticism towards the speeches of the others.
  • Intercultural Studies
    Having completed this course the students will able to identify global questions and problems from the perspectives of different cultures, the communication dynamics in the other cultures, the similarities and the differences between their values and those of other cultures, as well as the similarities and differences between their communication practices and those from other cultures. In addition, students are expected to become more aware of the stereotypes that society has for different cultures and as a result will better understand their place in the global community. The students will start thinking critically about topics related to their ethnicity, gender identity, class, religion, national origin, age and other demographic characteristics and their impact on the communication process. After finishing Intercultural Studies, the students will also gain communication skills for working in groups through participation in research projects and will acquire the necessary skills to present their research projects.

  • Introduction to Shakespeare
    Shakespeare, with no doubt, is the only greatest artist of all times. This course includes some of his work; we will enable the students to research independently about his historical achievements. We will focus on his poems and dramas and we will relate them to the era he lived in. His most appreciable sonnets will be studied, and then we will focus on his four dramas (Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Henry V, Richard III). We will also watch the four movies. The main focus of this course is to differentiate between the “traditional” and “modern” interpretations of Shakespeare’s texts.

    Journalism 1 examines the principles of journalism and of the journalism methods, returning to the different information media, as well as places and styles, it also investigates the relationship between the big and small business newspapers and the government and it includes the practical application of writing and publishing stories. Journalism 1 examines editorial practices and cultures, planning, gathering, selection and presentation of news, together with the research techniques and the interview skills. The relation between the lexemes (collocations, idioms, polisemy, synonyms, metaphor). Usage of words (cohesion, idioms, cliché, sayings). The varieties of the English dictionary. The formal dictionary versus collocations. Fake friends, national etymology and other problematic words.

  This course aims to introduce the students to the theoretical and practical schools of teaching and learning theEnglish language, it also reflects on the modern teaching methodologies of English as a foreign language. The topics included are: Learning a foreign language at basic level, teaching all language skills, teaching vocabulary, teaching grammar and pronunciation, planning and lecturing, using literature in teaching, technology in teaching, testing and assessment, etc.

Although the focus is on printed journalism, we will also examine other forms, including photo-journalism, blogging, and audio-visual multimedia. Journalism 1 examines editorial practices and cultures, planning, gathering, selection and presentation of news, together with the research techniques and the interview skills. It also teaches the objectivity ideas, selection of news, news resources, slander and ethics. It will focus more on the radio, TV journalism criteria. They examine the professional working conditions of a free journalist and the effort to “sell” at least one story or report to a valid media by the end of the course.

    The aim of this course is to introduce students to the post-colonial literature, theory and criticism. The texts are compiled using different materials of different philosophers, historical and modern, from the third world and the West. The post-colonialism includes the third world and the experience of the Diaspora; the post-colonialism is understood as including a complex group of cultures, ethnographies, political and economical processes and conflicts. The results present more locations: Metropolitan/ excessively developed world and colonial/ world in development; academic/institutional/ and cultural/political.

  • Post-colony theory and criticism
    The aim of this course is to introduce students to the post-colonial literature, theory and criticism. The texts are compiled using different materials of different philosophers, historical and modern, from the third world and the West. The post-colonialism includes the third world and the experience of the Diaspora; the post-colonialism is understood as including a complex group of cultures, ethnographies, political and economical processes and conflicts. The results present more locations: Metropolitan/ excessively developed world and colonial/ world in development; academic/institutional/ and cultural/political.
  • Afro-American culture and religion
    This course will describe and analyse the descent and the role of the Afro-American religion in the American history, from cultural and socio-political aspects. The course is supposed to help in enabling the students to understand the role of Afro-American religion in the American society.

  The course translation 1 investigates the methods, techniques, approaches and theories of translation. It gives instructions for successful translation and at the same time it gives instructions for uninterrupted interpretation. The focus is on translating literary texts like prose and poems, other documents are analysed and translated like newspaper articles, official documents and professional texts from the field of business, law, and administration. The course also examines the ethic, morale, and responsible translation.

  This course is designed to offer the students an interdisciplinary introduction into the history and culture of the English-speaking countries (with an emphasis on UK and USA). The course consists of versatile materials, and approaches the topics from a variety of fields, such as literature, visuals, film, anthropology, philosophy, etc. It is expected that this would enable the students gain a holistic, multidimensional and critically nuanced overview of the social history and culture of the English-speaking countries. Throughout the lectures, the students will also be introduced to the multicultural diversity of those societies, as well as gain an insight into the topics regarding social differences, equalities and inequalities. In this sense, this course will enable the students to explore a variety of topics both through a historical as well as through a contemporary framework.

It includes a description of how vocabulary is learned, how it is used in speaking and writing, and discussions for the current best practices of teaching vocabulary. Specific questions related to this course are: what does it mean to know a word, how many words are there, which words should be learned, explicitly against the random learning of vocabulary, the importance of reading in learning vocabulary, strategies for learning vocabulary, vocabulary teaching techniques and vocabulary testing.

  This module will investigate the key aspects of the modern theories in translating with a predominant, chronological approach in order to improve student’s understanding of the processes related to translation, and the criteria of assessing a „good“translation practice.     This course aims to analyse the key aspects of the descendance, motives and the types of negative utopia in literature, same as in the SF genre in literature (escapism, spacious exoticism). By analyzing this genre the students will engage in active thinking and analyses for the influence of the communication technologies on the culture and the life of the modern societies. Through this they will also gain critical understanding of the political engagement on this genre which is an expression of the awareness of existence or the need for society changes.
  • Detective Stories
    Detective Stories is an elective course which will examine the detective stories of the 19th and 20th century of British and American writers. We will examine the early examples of the detective stories by describing the famous detective characters like Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Father Braun and we will continue to the modern example of the noted genra. The course will investigate the classic detective stories and novels by English writers like: Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Cristie, G.K Chesterton, and the American writers like: Edgar Allan Poe, Dashiel Hammet, and Raymond Chandler. Through this we are going to examine the main differences which exist between the English and American detective stories. We will also be able to watch some movie adoptions of some film noar classics like The Maltese Falcon and Double immunity. This course has a strong theoretical dimension and we will use the modern critical concepts to investigate the reasons for the popularity of the detective stories, their ideological position, their ethical content and the social context in which the stories are based on (for instance London in the 1890-s for Sherlock Holmes and California in the 1930-s for Philip Marlov, Chandler). The course will propose reasons why the detective stories now are a much studied spectrum of the popular stories.

  The students have to take different courses and do things like: needs analysis, course design, and lesson planning, to be allowed to participate in the practical aspect of teaching. The students will have a mentor and regular classes which will enable them to be efficient teachers and to understand the dynamics of the classes. The students will first observe and gain practice step by step until they teach a class which is 100% correct.

• [6 ECTS] Advanced Academic English 1
  This course is designed as a fourth-year Academic English class. The first part focuses on strengthening reading skills, while also guiding students towards independent academic research. Students will conduct academic research (on a topic of their choosing but in a relevant field), familiarizing themselves with research databases, analyzing articles—with particular attention paid to abstracts, and the format/structure of academic writing. At the end of the semester, students will use their notes to first outline and then write a Literature Review, synthesizing different arguments and opinions.
• [6 ECTS] Applied Communication
  This is a course designed to focus on those who are going to be teaching core and additional subjects in English to non-native English speakers – i.e. Teachers who use English as a Second Language teaching subjects other than English in English. The focus of the course will be on identifying the challenges of teaching in this environment as well as the development of strategies that allow you to become an effective and successful teacher or presenter. We will be combining (integrating) the various skills in a flexible, creative manner so that students with varying needs can still meet their own academic, personal and professional objectives. To this end, the methodological approach will be communicative with pedagogical emphasis on teaching in an ESL environment.

  This course traces the major figures of literary importance in the history of the United States of America. It focuses on some of the most significant writers from the Colonial era to the present day. This course explores crucial features of the American cultural and literary including certain core themes such as: racism and slavery, faith and religion, the emergence of the nation, the idea and practice of democracy, the frontier and the West, suffrage and civil rights, gender issues and feminism in America. A successful student of this course will have a basic understanding of the literature of the United States, and will know some of the most prominent writers and their works.

  • Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
    The course will explore the history of cultural anthropology from the late 19th to the late 20th century, including a brief introduction of the major branches of anthropology (socio-cultural, linguistic, biological and archaeological anthropology). However, the main focus on will be its cultural stream and paradigms used for interpreting and understating cultures and societies. We are particularly interested in the role, evolution, and transformation of the past anthropological approaches to understanding cultures, as well as their new manifestation in contemporary anthropology. The course will also treat extremely important and highly interesting ethnographies made in the 19th and 20th centuries of a variety of societies. We will also look at some contemporary ethnographies, which treat burning issues regarding globalization, technology, and ethics in general. Particular emphasis will be placed on the British and American school of anthropological research. We will also look at the ways in which the anthropological thought was related to other disciplines and broader intellectual currents.
  • Theory of Literature
    This course aims to introduce students to the major literary theories of the twentieth century, and their proponents. It provides students not only with pragmatically useful theories with which to approach the study of literary texts, but also will familiarize students with some of the major literary and philosophical ideas of the contemporary world. Thinkers to be studied will include: Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, Raymond Williams, Sigmund Freud, Jacques Derrida and the course will explore major philosophical movements: Structuralism and Post-Structuralism, Feminism, Psychoanalysis and Post-Colonialism.
  • Creative Writing
    This introductory course in creative writing is designed to give students an opportunity to develop their writing talents across a number of literary forms and in varied communication contexts. Students will be expected to produce original writing in prose and poetry as well as to respond to the work of established writers and their student peers. The course will combine creative writing with literary analysis and media criticism so that the ‘writing’ of this course covers a range of contexts and styles: literary, journalistic, poetic and dramatic.

    This course aims to assist learners who need to learn a foreign language for use in their specific fields, such as science, technology, medicine, leisure, and academic learning. Its supplementary aim is to assist future second language professionals who wish to learn how to design ESP courses and programs in an area of specialization such as English for business, for Civil Engineering, for Academic Purposes, and for health service purposes. Students are introduced to ESP instructional strategies, materials adaptation and development, and evaluation. At the same time, students will learn key communication skills and strategies which are useful in any workplace environment.

  This course seeks to further develop students’ academic English skills in all four skill areas (speaking, reading, listening and writing) through a variety of activities and projects. Students will engage with various topics in academic discourses, engage in research, write responses and reflections to lectures, as well as study presentation styles and rhetorical techniques, both written and oral.

  This course studies the characteristics and consequences of English as a world language. It analyses the varieties of English in the world today, noting particularly differences among native-speaking Anglophone countries (such as Britain, Ireland, the United States, Australia, India, and South Africa) and non-native Anglophone usage. It also investigates the technical and grammatical significance of having a language used more by non-native speakers than by native speakers. Successful students will have a broad knowledge of the primary differences amongst the native ‘Englishes,’ and will also be able to assess the major implications of having a decentralized language without any clear homeland or governing authority.

  This course is a general introduction to the field of linguistics, a subject which has as its aim the analytic study of human languages. The course will revise and refresh students’ existing knowledge in five core areas of linguistics: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. However, the course aims to open up the field of linguistics to look at language variation and change (sociolinguistics and historical linguistics), aspects of cognitive linguistics (psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics), as well as looking at the most crucial aspects of language acquisition and language learning. The course objectives are to show to students the full complexity and importance of linguistics to the study of languages.

It analyses the major textual and dramatic accomplishments of the three plays (The Spanish Tragedy, The Jew of Malta, and Hamlet) that best define the genre of ‘revenge tragedy.’ Student work is assessed by formal academic essay, formal presentations in-class, in-class examination, and the clarity, information, and contemplation in their contributions to class discussion. Successful students will finish the course with an informed understanding of the differences among these three writers, and will distinguish amongst the main developments made by Marlowe and Shakespeare on Kyd’s model.
  • Using Literature in the EFL Classroom
    This course will explore the purpose and place of English literature in the ELT curriculum. It will examine the relationship between language and literature teaching and how literature can assist in achieving language learning goals. The course will evaluate different theories of literature in ELT and it will also look at the wider question of why literature should be studied in a University setting either for L1 or L2 learners. Specific modules on teaching prose fiction, poetry and drama will explore different methods of teaching these genres in a classroom setting.

    In this course students will gain an understanding of the importance and impact of educational research on teaching and learning the English language, students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of conducting research, strategies and techniques which are used in the implementation of research in education and the way how they affect the nature of teaching.

    This course is an extension of the work on English as a method of professional communication offered in part 1. As a world language, English is also a medium by which professionals in varied fields communicate and interact. This module will focus on practical uses of English in the workplace, applicable to institutions such as social services, non-governmental organizations, and schools. It will explore English as used in a wide range of communication-centred jobs including human resources, public relations, training, and management. By analysing modes and methods of communication in these environments, students will obtain a broader understanding of English as used in a professional context.
