Decision:

The program for Political Sciences aims to familiarize students with the basic principles of policy, organization and functioning of national and international institutions, and political authorities, political thought and theoretical issues of the governance, as well. The program describes and identifies the branches of legislative, executive and judiciary; their interaction in the governance of the rule of law and functioning democracy.

The main objectives of the program are:

  • To enable students to gain theoretical knowledge and understanding of the importance of political processes through comparative political approach.
  • To enable studentsto participate in various levels of government system and public life and as political analysts to be able to give views on political issues.
  • To prepare students for assessment of political ttendenciesin society and the state, and be able to assess their impact onEuro integration processes in the country and the region.
  • To enable students to identify the needs of interest groups and public institutions within the political process.
  • Be able to take initiative in identifying and addressing the learning needs of state institutions and public administration.

Political Sciences Department provides the educational requirements to support students begin their professional career path in government, state and local government agencies, municipalities, public institutions, political parties, non-profit organizations, universities and corporations. 

Knowledge and understanding
  • Has knowledge of basic principles of policy, organization and functioning of national and international institutions and political authorities, political thought and theoretical issues of management.
  • Has knowledge of the branches of legislative, executive and judiciary and their interaction in the rule of law and functioning democracy.
  • Has theoretical knowledge and understanding of the importance of political processes through comparative political approach.
Applying knowledge and understanding
  • Is able to work in the political organization of governmental and nongovernmental institutions and to provide analysis of various political processes.
  • Can participate in various levels of government system and public life as a political analyst by providing a professional analysis in favor of solving political problems.
  • Is able to conduct a public survey and implement appropriate methodology.
  • Is able to demonstrate ability to lobby, to own and negotiate with multiple actors with political influence in society.
  • Can apply theoretical knowledge, to perform research to solve social phenomena and to develop a career in the academic field.
Making judgement
  • Is able to think critically and involve actively in current political issues at central and local level.
  • Can differentiate the various phenomena associated with the political culture of certain community.
  • Critically compares political tendencies in society and state and values their impact on Euro integration processes in the country.

Semester 1

  • [6 ECTS] Introduction to Law
    Introduction to Law uses the knowledge, basic concepts and categories from other legal disciplines and has the same task to give basic, general and introductory legal knowledge of the phenomena of the state and law.
  • [6 ECTS] Introduction to Political Science
    Through this course the students will gain knowledge of basic categories, concepts and definitions that will help them to understand study and critically approach to contemporary politics and contemporary society. It should: * Enhance their political culture and consciousness with the given texts from classical and contemporary authors and political analysts. * Enhance their knowledge and capacity for studying the European ethic policy. * Help students to improve their writing, thinking and expression related to policy. Through the lectures the students should get several responses of the basic questions like: What is politics and why it is so important for our lives and society? How was a human being developed as a political person? What are characteristics of the modern democratic society? What are characteristics of the Macedonian society as political one? What is a policy? Is it integral part of a man? Why and how do we study policy?
  • [6 ECTS] Principles of Sociology
    The course "Principles of Sociology" aims students to gain general knowledge about social phenomena as well as special and specific knowledge about social processes and phenomena that they are facing and will face in future as citizens and academics.

Semester 2

  • [6 ECTS] Contemporary Political Thought
    The course is designed so that students will provide fundamental knowledge and skills in contemporary political thought in the world and in our country. It will include modern and classical political philosophers such as-Makijaveli, John Locke, Mill, Raus, Nusbaum, Edward Said, Amin Malouf and others. Liberal traditions, identities, free society, feminism, and multiculturalism are the main concepts of the political theory and social practice. The new social paradigms, political life in institutions will include philosophical, sociological and legal elements with the normal dominance of the political momentum. This course will enable students to perceive and explain the political and social occurrence, actively participate in political life and development of modern political thought.
  • [6 ECTS] Introduction to Political Economy
    Political economy examines the role of economic processes in shaping the society and culture. Political economy makes an overall analysis of political, social, cultural, ecological life and spans their interaction with economic processes and developments. The basic questions that this course aims are how political institutions affect on economic growth and development, and how economic conditions affect on the decision-making and policies.
  • [6 ECTS] Social Psychology
    Topics for discussion include the perception of personality, agreement, forming opinions, evaluation and change, prejudice, aggression, social learning, group dynamics, social psychology and society and legal and organizational application.

Semester 3

  • [6 ECTS] Basis of Statistics
    The course provides an understanding of basic statistical analysis. Its task is to train students to use basic statistical methods in solving business problems. With the application of statistical methodology the students will be successfully familiar, reveal and explicate the laws and the relations between economic occurrences and phenomena. Among them special attention deserve; Descriptive analysis, Random variable and deploy probability, statistical sampling, statistical assessment, testing statistical hypotheses, analysis of variance, chi-square test, simple straight line regression and correlation, multiple regression straight line and correlation, index numbers and time series analysis.
  • [6 ECTS] Research Methods in Political Sciences
    This course offers the possibility for students to be introduced with scientific and research methods in sociological spheres and political occurrences. Students will learn about the theoretical and practical aspect, methods of scientific researches and their knowledge for science and individuals within society. The contents of the course consists of: theoretical and empirical researches, proportions of methodic and theory of cognition , scientific knowledge and their structure, role an function of scientific research projects; monitoring; questionnaire; classification; interpretation of collected photographic material etc.
  • [6 ECTS] Constitutional Law
    The students will gain theoretical and practical introduction of constitutional law as a basic branch of law, the Constitution as the highest legal and political act of the state and the Constitutionality and Legality as basic principles of the law.

Semester 4

  • [6 ECTS] Political Parties and Election Models
    The course political parties and election models aims to acquaint students with general theoretical and organizational knowledge of political parties and election models which are used in the world and in Republic of Macedonia. The content of the subject encompasses the following themes: general knowledge of creation of political parties, political systems, organization of political parties, election models, financing of political parties etc.
  • [6 ECTS] International Relations
    This course introduces to students the theoretical component in international relations, key ideas and debates in international relations, particularly on basic concepts, actors in international relations, foreign policy, and the power in international relations. The lectures will also be focused on international political economy and politics of global welfare, the existing and future problems in the international system, including armed conflict, economy, demography and environment.
  • [6 ECTS] Political Management
    * Acquisition of basic knowledge of the term policy and management * Be familiar with basic tools and activities relating to distinguish political processes according to different criteria. * Acquiring adequate knowledge to prepare the survey and field work. * Application of knowledge gained from other courses and building a separate methodology for the preparation of essays-paper work. * To analyze the electoral processes and the method of derivation. * To draw political speech and to simulate the appearance of a political event. * Ability to actively participate in a debate organized by the Students Union. * Ability to prepare and participate in research projects and presenting the results of scientific research. * To identify different ways and use of scientific sources, to learn to read selectively and comparatively analyze the political processes.

Semester 5

  • [6 ECTS] Public Finances
    * Provide students with knowledge for Public Finances as one of the main roles of macroeconomic policy and fundamental instruments for functioning of a national economy in a whole and as a subsystem of an economic system of the country * Introduction to knowledge for public goods and expenditures for their security, externalities, the distribution of social income, allocation and reallocation of revenue, comparative aspects of public finances in developed countries, those in transition, the specifics of the fiscal systems of Macedonia, trends and challenges, fiscal decentralization, etc.. * Introduction to professional knowledge about the budget and extra-budgetary funds as the main instruments of fiscal policy, procedures about preparation, elaboration, composing, approval, implementation and control of the budget, and techniques of the budget in the local and central level, as well. * Creating a clear picture for students for the functioning of a fiscal system giving points of reference in terms of various fiscal theories that can perform comparative difference and find common points of operation of these systems in different countries. * Informatively familiarize students with the main indicators of fiscal policy in the Republic of Macedonia, creating a real database in terms of long-term fiscal trends of RM by stimulating the students to work independent scholarly papers and essays on the fiscal area.
  • [6 ECTS] Introduction to Public Policy
    The course aims to provide students with easier understanding and master the public policy, its principles for creating, maintaining specific policy analysis, implementation, evaluation and development of it. Management of public policies is a discipline problem solving that draws knowledge of basic theories and methodologies of social sciences, the social professions and the philosophy of politics. The courses will also deal with different definitions of policy analysis. There is no agreement on how precisely to define public policy. Students will have the opportunity to become familiar with this field and to critically analyze the developments and events in the area of public policy.

    This course is designed to familiarize students with basic concepts and problems of international law and international legal order. The course provides knowledge about the nature, structure and the function of the international legal system, the division of international law, basic principles of international law, actors in international law, sources of international law, regulating the relations between states, and treatment of human rights in international level.

  • [6 ECTS] Comparative Political Systems
    Notion of politics and political system, political systems and other related scientific disciplines, the historical aspect of the development of the political systems, political systems in ancient thoughts, political systems in contemporary political thoughts, the classification of political systems, political systems and political ideologies, political systems and democracy, political system and government, political system and globalization, political systems in western countries, political systems in post-communist countries, political systems in developing countries.
  • [6 ECTS] Politics of International Economic Relations
    Politics of International Economic Relations aims to study the relationship between international political and economic systems. This course makes an overall analysis of international trade trends, the role of monetary policy, political management and their influence on economic processes and development. The basic questions that this case stands are to give clear access to why some countries stagnate in their development and why some are growing very quickly. Also pays attention to the institutional commitment and their importance in the development of societies.

    Objectives of the curriculum : - Will have a deeper conceptual understanding of globalization as a phenomenon that will flat the world (Friedman); - Have a vision for themselves and society in conditions of globalization; - Able to debate intelligently the globalization in various dimensions: economic, political, cultural and socio-spatial; - Able to identify the background of globalization and problematic reflections (eg anti-globalization); - Ready to compare different perspectives on globalization and its impact nationally, regionally and internationally; - Ability to develop a structured study of the "product" or (EPI) phenomenon of globalization.
